St Helens Chamber is pleased to announce that we have been shortlisted by Times Educational Supplement as one of the country’s leading training providers in their Further Education Awards.

The Awards, which were held at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Friday, are designed to celebrate inspirational individuals and outstanding further education organisations.

The Chamber was among eight training providers from across the UK to be shortlisted for the award, with Sussex based training provider HIT Training claiming first place on the night.

Joanne Abraham, Director of Training Services said: “We were delighted to have been shortlisted for the TES FE Training Provider of the Year Award.

“Getting to the final stages for the Award and being recognised as one of the top training providers in the country is a fantastic achievement and one we are very proud of. It is a testament to the high quality training we provide across Merseyside, in businesses, for young people and to help people into work.”

St Helens Chamber’s Annual Dinner Dance took place at Haydock Park Racecourse in January, welcoming guest speaker Johnny Vegas back onto home territory.

The Chamber’s black tie networking event of the year saw over 250 guests in attendance to be entertained, network and raise money for charity.

Johnny Vegas has become one of Britain’s best-loved comic actors but as guests discovered, before he came to fame, he attended Catholic boarding-school St Joseph’s College to train for the priesthood. Feeling homesick, he returned home after just four terms, going on to embark on a career in comedy. Guests on the evening we treated to an hilarious example of Johnny’s very own brand of comedy.

The headline news from the evening was the £10,000 which was raised for charity, through auction and other fundraising activities. The funds will be split equally between The Steve Prescott Foundation and Willowbrook Hospice.

Lucky auction bidders on the night took home some fantastic prizes including a signed Anthony Joshua framed montage, a luxury Spa Package from Chill Out Spa, two tickets for a luxury trip on the Orient Express, four tickets for a Haydock Park Race Day, including lunch in the Kauto Star restaurant, and two tickets to a recording of 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

Nottingham City Council has met with Nottingham College about its planned closure of the nursery at the College in Basford and the impact this will have on local families and staff members. Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Jon Collins and Nottingham North MP Alex Norris issued the following statement,

“Despite our meeting with Nottingham College there appears to be little willingness on their part to withdraw their proposal to close the nursery at Basford Hall. We are disappointed at their unwillingness to reconsider their decision and heard little today to change our view that this is an entirely unnecessary decision and will ultimately be to the detriment of learners needing this kind of support in north Nottingham.

“We also share a wider concern in the direction currently being taken by the college as it appears to be moving away from the principle of offering support to all learners of all abilities but instead towards a narrower model of education which will be unable to fully address the needs of learners in the City.

“We are keen to build a consensus between Council, the College and local representatives about how best to provide further education in Nottingham and how the full range of learners can be supported to achieve their potential. This can only happen however if Nottingham College is willing to withdraw the proposed closure of Basford Hall Nursery and reconsider the support offer it makes to those City learners who need it most.”

An Indian and Bangladeshi Restaurant from Newark, Nottinghamshire is hoping to curry favour with judges at the British Curry Awards after being shortlisted for Best Indian Restaurant in the Midlands.

On hearing the announcement, owner of the Ashiana Saiqul Miah said: “We couldn’t believe it when the letter came from the British Curry Awards judges telling us that we had been shortlisted from thousands of excellent Indian restaurants across the UK down to just three now competing to be named Best Restaurant in the Midlands!

“It’s such an accolade to be shortlisted. We know we have some stiff competition amongst the other nominees, some of whom already have Michelin Stars for their Indian food, but I know my team are already stars in my eyes.”

Known as the Curry Oscars, the British Curry Awards have been dubbed by Prime Minister Theresa May as “special, better than any Michelin Star, better than any accolade”.

SCOTLAND will be the number one seeds for the 2018 Betway World Cup of Darts following the confirmation of the 32 teams for the event, with Rob Cross to make his debut for England.

The 32-nation World Cup of Darts will be held from May 31-June 3 at the Eissporthalle in Frankfurt, and broadcast live on Sky Sports.

Reigning champions Netherlands – three-time winners since the event’s introduction in 2010 – will be represented once again by Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld as they bid to retain the title.

However, with seedings based on the cumulative PDC Order of Merit ranking of players, Scotland’s Peter Wright and Gary Anderson – ranked second and fourth in the world – will be top seeds as they bid to erase the memory of a first round exit to Singapore in 2017.

England, four-times winners, will have a new-look side as 2017 representative Dave Chisnall is joined by debutant Cross, whose World Championship win lifted him up to third in the world.

Former finalists Australia will be seeded fourth as Simon Whitlock teams up again with Kyle Anderson, while two-time runners-up Wales will see Gerwyn Price joined by another debutant, Jonny Clayton.

World Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney partners Brendan Dolan for number six seeds Northern Ireland, who were semi-finalists in 2014 and 2016.

Seventh seeds Belgium will see former finalist Kim Huybrechts partnered by reigning PDC Unicorn World Youth Champion Dimitri Van den Bergh, who makes his debut in the event.

Austria’s Mensur Suljovic and debutant Zoran Lerchbacher complete the eight seeds, with the remaining 24 nations being drawn at random in the first round draw.

The two surprise packages of the 2017 event, following runs to the quarter-finals, will retain the same pairings as Singapore once again see Paul Lim and Harith Lim in action and Russia are represented by Boris Koltsov and Aleksandr Oreshkin.

Host nation Germany, also quarter-finalists in 2017, will again be represented by youngster Max Hopp and Martin Schindler, while recent Development Tour event winner Dawson Murschell makes his debut alongside three-time World Champion John Part for Canada.

Chinese youngster Xiaochen Zong is partnered by Momo Zhou, who becomes the second female competitor to take part in the event after qualifying recently.

Justin Broton edged out Dylan Duo to earn the right to partner Dyson Parody for Gibraltar, with new faces Alexander Fehlmann and Andreas Bless set to team up for Switzerland.

The draw for the Betway World Cup of Darts will be made on Thursday May 17.

The first round will be split across Thursday May 31 and Friday June 1, with the second round on Saturday June 2. The quarter-finals will begin the final day of action on Sunday June 3, with the semi-finals and final in the evening session.

Nottinghamshire County Council Chairman Councillor John Handley has raised £12,119.33 for his chosen charity during his term in office.

Councillor Handley concludes his term this week, with the total raised since last May for Nottinghamshire Hospice also being announced.

There have been many fundraising activities and celebration events which have contributed to the money raised.

Elaine Hopkins, Community Fundraiser, at Nottinghamshire Hospice, said: “Councillor John Handley and his lady Margaret have been excellent ambassadors for Nottinghamshire Hospice from day one.

“John’s initial target was to raise £5,000 so he has far exceeded what he was hoping to achieve. John and Margaret do not miss an opportunity to promote the hospice in all that they do.”

Councillor Handley said: “Nottinghamshire Hospice does incredible things. It does a phenomenal amount of work and it is vital that they and other hospices raise funds. It is difficult because they are voluntary organisations and they have to find funding through charitable work – but money is not a bottomless pit. I have been delighted and proud of everyone who has helped me to fundraise for Nottinghamshire Hospice and raise its profile during my term in office.”

Meeting patients and volunteers has been high on the Chairman’s agenda over the last year. He has been to numerous events at the hospice’s headquarters in Woodborough Road, Nottingham, and has visited 11 hospice shops across the county.

John attended the volunteers’ annual thankyou event and hosted three volunteer thank you parties at County Hall.
Other key highlights include a civic service at Southwell Minster, two concerts at Brinsley Parish Hall, a hog roast at Beauvale Priory and an event at Welbeck Abbey to promote artisan food and drink producers.

Councillor Andy Brown’s wife Sylvia who herself has had cancer, raised £900 on a sponsored parachute skydive.

The couple worked with staff to organise a Christmas raffle at County Hall, promoting the hospice and its work in each council department. And they have been to Veolia, the county council’s waste management contractor which managed a recycling fundraising initiative. During January, Veolia donated £2 to the hospice for every tonne of recyclable plastic bottles and cans collected from kerbside recycling bins.

Margaret has also knitted and sold Christmas stockings and Easter chicks, while the couple encouraged County Hall staff to donate Easter eggs for an Easter egg hunt.

Elaine added: “I cannot thank them enough for their dedication and support that they have shown to me and the hospice during the last 12 months. The money raised will make a real difference to our patients and their families. John and Margaret have both been teachers and wanted some of the money to be spent on education, which has allowed us to train 12 new counsellors to work in our counselling and bereavement service.”

Founded in 1980, Nottinghamshire Hospice is a community-based palliative care centre providing high quality care services to adults who have terminal and life-limiting illnesses, and their families and carers.
