Sean Dyche’s side booked their place in the fourth round thanks to a magnificent performance by ‘one of our own’, Jay Rodriguez, who scored all 4 goals in the 4-1 victory over Rochdale.
His 12-minute hat-trick helped the Clarets turn the third-round tie on its head after the League Two side took the lead just after half time. He then bagged another from close range to give his side the chance of a cup run in the competition where he scored his first senior goal for the club.

Triumphant win secures place in next round of the league cup
Burnley FC Women secured a spot in the Preliminary round of the FA Women’s National League Cup on Sunday, in style with a 7-2 win over league rivals Hull City Ladies.

A busy first half saw the home side start brightly with Katie Thompson and Emily Smith on the right, sending the ball in to find Liberty Bott who smashed it into the top right-hand corner to open the scoring four minutes in.
The joy was short lived however, with Burnley quick on the attack managing to equalise two minutes later through Lucia Molinari. The goals kept coming in the half, on 21 minutes Emily Smith rounded keeper Bracewell to put Hull ahead.

Ten minutes before half time with the clarets battling to get back in the game, the referee awarded a free-kick 20 yards out which Millie Ravening hit superbly to bring the clarets equal again, 2-2.
Shortly before half time Burnley were forced to make a change in goal, with Lucy Farrell replacing an injured captain, Lauren Bracewell. Burnley were quick to it in the second half with both sides enjoying chances.
However, the visitors took the lead for the first time in the game when striker Evie Priestley struck at goal to put Burnley ahead, and to bring her current goals tally to 4 goals in 5 appearances so far this season.

Chasing an equaliser Hull put the Burnley defence to work with Rachel Ackroyd having a good chance but defenders Megan Dykes, Olivia Wilson, Cara Bickett and Dani Coooper prevented any goals.

In the second change of the afternoon for the clarets, Katie Thomas replaced Lucia Molinari.
Shortly after, having enjoyed a positive spell of possession the clarets struck again with Dominique Cooper joining fellow new recruits Molinari and Ravening on the scoresheet, when a through ball saw her in on goal to strengthen the visitors lead. 2-4. More goals were to be added, with Courtney Willis bagging a fifth in the 80th minute, followed by Evie Priestley who netted her second of the afternoon.

With the final whistle drawing close, there was late drama when a foul on Katie Thomas in the area saw Nicola Worthington step up to the penalty spot to inflict another goal on the hosts, making the final score 2-7.
The triumphant win sees the clarets progress into the next round of the FA Women’s National League Cup.

Burnley FC Women Manager, Matt Bee said:
“The first half was frustrating, we were well below our standards.
The intensity of the performance and quality was lacking.
“Second half we found better movement with the ball and played into better areas of the pitch. It’s good to get goals, however, there are areas we need to work on and refine.”
It won’t be long before the claret women meet Hull City Ladies again, with the two sides due to reunite in the league in two weeks’ time on Sunday 26th September.

Teddy Mfuni felt the team played well but lacked that finishing touch after falling to a late defeat away at Carlisle United. PNE U19 fell to a 2-1 away defeat in the EFL Youth Alliance league yesterday thanks to goals from Mason Hardy and Max Kilsby either side of Mfuni’s late equaliser.

Mfuni said: “I think the team played well, I think they played really well, we got in and around the box we had so many chances, but we failed to put those chances away but overall, I thought we did well and were unlucky in the end.” The young centre half opened his scoring account for the season in the defeat and was pleased to see the ball hit the back of the net. “We had to get a goal back and I had to use my chance, I saw the ball coming and I anticipated where the ball would land and made sure that my effort would hit the back of the net and I was very pleased that it did. “Going into the next game Mfuni believes focus will be the key to not repeating moments like those in the final seconds of the game again in the future.

“In those moments of the game I need to try and keep everyone focused till the last minute since everybody is tired from playing a full, extremely physical 90 minutes, I just have to keep pushing them until the end.”

Tickets for our upcoming trip to Huddersfield Town are now on sale to Season Ticket Holders (one ticket per season ticket).

Entries for IRONMAN UK 2021 will open to all athletes this Thursday (July 16) at 1pm. The gruelling triathlon – made up of a 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile bike ride, followed by a marathon – will take place in and around Bolton on July 4, 2021.

The borough has proudly hosted the IRONMAN event since 2009. Unfortunately, this year’s event could not take place due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Leader of Bolton Council, Cllr David Greenhalgh, said: “Ironman is a huge test of endurance and one of the ultimate challenges anyone can take on.

“Our borough has been hosting this brilliant event for many years now, and we are looking forward to welcoming all our athletes and spectators.

“We hope to see everyone who was going to take part this year, and we will be working with IRONMAN to make next year’s events the best yet.”

IRONMAN UK Race Director, Sam Brawn, added: “We have been working hard to make sure that next year’s race is even bigger and better.

“We cannot wait to once again experience the thrill of racing and to welcome all the athletes and supporters to the 2021 race!”

Entries will be limited. For more information and to register visit https://www.ironman.com/im-uk-register.

More details about registration for these races will be released at a later date.

Keaton Jennings, Jos Buttler and Matt Parkinson have been selected for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka next month. Three Lancashire players have been selected in a 16-man squad for the two-Test series against Sri Lanka starting at Galle on 19 March. Opener Keaton Jennings has earned a recall to the national side, with Jos Buttler and Matt Parkinson retaining their places from the recent series win over South Africa. Jennings returns to the England fold for the first time since the West Indies tour a year ago.

The left-hander will be looking to add to his 17 Test caps, which includes two centuries – both scored in the subcontinent – on debut in Mumbai in 2016 and a superb 146 not out against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2018.
Buttler featured in all four of the Tests against South Africa, while Parkinson will be hopeful of a maiden Test cap in traditionally spin-friendly conditions after being a part of both Test tours this winter. James Anderson, who is recovering from a cracked rib sustained in January during the second Test in Cape Town against South Africa, will continue to condition and prepare ahead of the start of the English season.

Commenting on the selection of the squad, National Selector Ed Smith, said: “The selection panel has supported continuity after a successful series victory in South Africa. “The South Africa tour marked the emergence of a very exciting group of young players, creating a nice balance with an experienced core of senior players.

That squad is mostly retained, with some tweaks to the squad relevant to injury, rest and the challenges of playing in sub-continent conditions. “Jimmy Anderson will continue to work with Lancashire and the ECB so that he is ready for the start of the County Championship season leading into the Test series against the West Indies in June.” The two-match Test series forms part of the ICC World Test Championship. Joe Root’s team currently stand in third place and will be looking to close in on India and Australia, who are currently leading the standings. The top two teams at the end of the two-year cycle will compete in the ICC World Test Championship Final in England in June 2021.

2020 England v Pakistan Test tickets
Shah, one of the most exciting young bowlers in international cricket, is expected to play a big part in the series against England this summer.
There is now limited availability for Day Two of England’s Specsavers Test match against Pakistan at Emirates Old Trafford between Thursday 7 to Monday 11 August.

Midfielder Mace Goodridge has signed a new contract with the Clarets, extending his stay at Turf Moor until the summer of 2021. The central midfielder, who joined the Clarets in the summer of 2018, is a regular for the club’s U23 side and was named on substitutes bench for the first team at Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League earlier this season.

Goodridge, 20, originally started out at Manchester City, before spending two years at Newcastle United in the youth team, where he played alongside current Magpies midfielder Matty Longstaff.

After an initial trial spell with the Clarets towards the end of the 2017/18 season, Goodridge then signed a first professional deal at Turf Moor, before going onto feature for the first team in pre-season of 2018/19. A serious knee-injury cut the season short in October last season, but after successful surgery, Goodridge signed a contract extension and was back in action for the U23s in September last year, where he has been a key figure since returning.

Goodridge smiled: “I’m really happy, to get it over the line, I’ve worked hard to get back from my injury, so I’m delighted to get it done. “Obviously, I have been in and around the first team a couple of times and that’s where I want to be. “You can see how well the first team lads have done, come through a tough patch against top teams recently and I want to be a part of that someday.

“I really enjoy being here, it’s my third season here now and I’m delighted to be here for a fourth come pre-season. “And although I have been to a few clubs, I really feel like I have found a home here and I’m ready to kick on.”

Registration has opened for the 2020 Williams BMW Rochdale Half Marathon and 10K – and prices have been cut for an early bird offer.
Entry for the half marathon is reduced by £8 and there’s £4 off the 10K for entries received by Tuesday, 31 March 2020. Over 200 people have already signed up for the popular event, which returns on Sunday, 4 October 2020.
‘Demand for 2020 places is already strong’ Races will start and finish by the Grade 1-listed Rochdale Town Hall, they will be chip-timed on fully-marshalled traffic-free courses, with a technical t-shirt and medal handed out to finishers.

Since 2015 over 5,800 people have taken part in the event, which takes in town and picturesque countryside scenes like Hollingworth Lake. The courses are relatively flat too, so they’re great for personal bests.
Councillor Janet Emsley, the council’s cabinet member for neighbourhoods, community and culture said:

“The event proved popular again last year and demand for 2020 places is already strong. The support and camaraderie was amazing with a friendly atmosphere, many personal bests achieved and thousands raised for good causes. We can’t wait to put on another incredible day and look forward to welcoming runners of all levels this October. Our early bird discount should encourage more people to secure their places.”

Half marathon places now cost £23.40 for club-runners, £25.40 for non-club runners, while the 10K is £16.60 for club runners, £18.60 for non-club runners. Fun Run entry opens in June 2020.

The annual event is co-ordinated by Rochdale Harriers, Middleton Harriers and Rochdale Triathlon Club, supported by Rochdale Borough Council.

“I think there’s been a bit of uneven decision making today. It’s disappointing but I guess that’s football” Gemma Donnelly felt key decisions did not go Rovers’ way in Sunday’s Continental Cup defeat at Sheffield United. Rovers were reduced to 10 men just 14 minutes into the game when Chelsey Jukes was adjudged to have handled the ball on the line. United scored the resulting penalty and used their player advantage to find the net a further three times either side of the break.

Saffron Jordan then rounded Blades ‘keeper Emily Batty in the second-half, and when her goalbound shot was blocked on the line by Leandra Little, no penalty was given. “We should have had a penalty,” Donnelly said speaking after the game. “I think there’s been a bit of uneven decision making today. It’s disappointing but I guess that’s football.

“The sending off, I’ve watched it back and it’s inconclusive. I can see why it may have been given but it completely changes the game. “They’ve gone 1-0, we’ve gone down to 10 players. We’re on the back foot, it’s just so hard to get back into it.

“We got a penalty in the end but we should have had one before that for exactly the same and we haven’t got it. “We can make all the excuses in the world but the fact is we’ve been beaten by a strong team. “Well done to Sheffield and good luck for the next games.”

The Rovers boss reserved praise for her team, who battled until the end and finally got a reward for their efforts when Saffron Jordan converted a 78th minute penalty. “I’m as proud as I could be of the girls for putting in a shift today and limiting 11 Sheffield players to the chances that they had. “We’ve had our backs against the wall for a good portion of that game but we did not lay down and let them just walk all over us.

“We’ve created our own chances, we’ve got a goal at the end and I don’t know how many consecutive corners we had at one stage. “I’m not suggesting we could have won the game, but it could have been 4-2 or 4-3 at some point.” Tickets for Rovers’ home games against Liverpool and Crystal Palace are now on sale!
